May 7, 2007Mariners are advised that the Champlain Canal will open for
navigation at 12 PM on Tuesday, May 8, 2007. Debris and reduced bridge
clearances may still be encountered. Mariners should exercise extreme
caution in the vicinity of dams near Locks C-1 through C-6, especially
when southbound, as barriers have not yet been set in place. In
addition, the entire Oswego Canal, the Erie Canal between E-23 in
Brewerton and E-27 in Lyons, and Lock CS-1 on the Cayuga-Seneca Canal
are scheduled to open for navigation on Friday, May 11, 2007. At that

PS: Don't forget to sign up for TRANSalert: many have asked: "Will it
alert me if the canal is open?" Answer is: No
I did contact the Ted Westerlings office they assist in co-coordinating
the Transalert program and asked if this was a possibility for the
future. It may be- They are looking into it- although they are limited
in the amount of text they can send out to a pda, cell etc. If you as
boaters feel being alerted to hazards, closing & openings are equally as
important let them know by sending them an email to
ted_westerling@canals.state.ny.us or you can email me at
winterha@borg.com and I will send them as a batch to Ted Westerling and
Carmella Mantello.

Again wishing you safe and healthy travels.. Leslie @ Winter Harbor
