I might be a bit late with this but as most of you know I have been away.

If you plan to use the canals as a super highway and not stop often and
enjoy the flavor of the area then zoom right on by and save yourself a
few dollars. If, on the other hand you wish to enjoy your trip and see
some of the sights and get to see something besides the insides of
locks, then by all means get both locking and mooring passes. Why take
the time to do the loop and fly on by some of the best parts. You can
take a road trip from NY to WA in 4 days but what have you see but
passing trees and farm land? If you want to see some things on the loop
then you will want to stop every 20 to 30 miles and spend the night and
take a walk or bike ride around the beautiful areas. This is not a
race, or is it? Do you have to get back to work? Then save the fuel
money and do the loop when you can enjoy it. Please don't make it a
race. Make it a destination and you will be happy that you did. We
were able to start in Waterford NY in June, do the Canadian waters part
of the loop in the summer and have plenty of time to get to Chicago by
early to mid September. I think this is meant to be fun, not a race.

Enjoy, life is too short,
Elaine
