West Marine, (others) have plastic quick reference placards with all
the signals, lights, radio frequencies, etc. on them and can be hung
at the pilot station. I'm a 100 ton Master Near Coastal, made a
living as a Commercial Pilot for years, working in the training
department after the health went south: that said: all professional
pilots use checklists and reference placards, surgical doctors do as
well, and on the bridge of any major ship in the world, quick
reference placards abound -- so why would we not buy them, post them
at the helm, and refer to them frequently? A few bucks at any marine
store. Yes, you have everything memorized to the best of your
ability, and the short memory jogs are great -- but the placards at
the helm are a must and they never forget and never get confused.
