GL: Erie vs. Chambly, which takes longer?

My wife and I are planning a loop trip next year at trawler-speed.  We  are 
trying to figure out the time/milage difference between going east from  Albany 
through the Erie Canal, or going north through Lake Champlain, and then  down 
the St. Lawrence.  Any other merit/demerit comments on these two  
alternatives are welcome.
