There is suppose to be a difference between a "marine" starter and a car
starter. The marine starter is suppose to be sealed so water can't get in it
and sparks can't get out.
That being said, when my starter went out on my 3ltr General Motors /
Mercruiser engine , I went to an automobile starter rebuild shop.He had the
exact same starter. When I had a Volvo engine, many years ago, I got a starter
out of a automobile junkyard for it.
Mercruiser wanted about $300.00 for a marine starter and I had mine rebuilt
for less than $100.00
I will bet it is the same. You may want to check it and see if its as sealed
up as the original.
Or perhaps a shop will rebuild your marine starter.

starter is the same as in the truck. Thanx, Jon
