We made it a point to stop at Amsterdam following the thorough review done by Ron and Molly.
What we found was exactly as promised; even better than expected. Karen met us at the dock giving
wonderful pointers about the local area. She also arrange transportation (free...her husband, Pat)
to a great and VERY reasonable restaurant, Pasqualli. The bulkhead, restrooms and laundry are all first
rate. Water was available and the pump-out should be fixed this week. Convenience store was an easy
walk.
Bottom line: any previous negatives should be deleted...Amsterdam is a great stop. Thanks
Ron and Molly!

Update on Amsterdam, NY mile 37.3, east of bridge E-19A on Erie Canal or
Mohawk River.
Update information for Skipper Bobbs 10th Edition of Cruising the NEW YORK
CANAL System. As of 15 June 2007. Talking with the city maintenance
personnel, all power pedestals operate, water fill is available at one
position
only for now, and pump out is awaiting parts for repair, due in this week.
Rest
rooms, shower and laundry are clean, and modern.
Riverlink Park opened this Monday last (11June), being closed since last
year for repairs from the devastating floods which had the docks and power
pedestals 12 feet deep in water and almost destroyed from floating trees and
debris. The entire area looks like it is just brand new.
Tie up on bulkhead wall or floating docks. Four power pedestals on each for
a total of eight, with two 120 single phase only, 30 Amps per pedestal. Only
way to get 50 Amps is the first pedestal only if you have a harness that
will plug into both 120v sockets producing 50 amp. No 220 power available.
$1
a foot overnight fee. Docking personnel are available from 4pm to 9pm
daily. If needed other than normal hours call 518 488 2530. Reservations
call
518 843 1974. Each pedestal will support two vessels of 30 to 40 feet in
length.
Dockage maintained by the city and leased and operated by the Pasquallibs
CafC), _www.Pasqualli.com_ (http://www.pasqualli.com/) , at the top of the
dock.
Dock snack shop looks brand new and is beautiful sitting on top of the hill
at the dock and is open for grill and sandwiches from 11 am to 9 pm weekdays
and weekends 3pm to 9pm and 3pm to 7pm. The main restaurant is located in the
hotel, over the walkway, thru the mall to the North entrance, and one block
south to Best Value Inn. Their Special is prime rib, 2b plus thick on
Friday
and Saturday nights. Overnight customers are given a 10% discount at the
main restaurant in the hotel. The walkway to the mall is locked at 9pm, but
visitors receive a key when registering so they can enjoy later night
entertainment in town. Dock or snack bar personnel will arrange for a ride
to the
restaurant or grocery store when requested and available.
The dockside facility has a modern and clean enclosed elevated walkway, with
elevator, over the fenced tracks and fenced roadway to the Amsterdam
Riverfront Center, a mall closed years ago when Walmart and other big box
companies
forced the small shops to leave the mall and move to the strip malls. Five
years ago the buildings were bought, remodeled, and the mall was turned into
a
professional office facility, 95% rented by mostly medical and dental
professionals and varied other shops. It even has an off track betting
facility,
restaurants, and senior day care center. Very nice and neat. The roadway
and
railway double fence the whole area so there is no problem with safety or
crime. The only crime in the area reported was just after the flood last
year
when everything was closed they broke into the dockside sandwich facility to
steal the beer.
Talking with city employees, workers in the office mall, and others we could
find no awareness of blight or crime at all. The area is clean, neat,
surrounded by double fencing with the rail and roadways, and TV cameras link
the
area to the local police department, which conducts scheduled visits. We
stopped because of recent reports of devastation and decided to spend the
night and
tomorrow and enjoy the prime rib. I might also add that if you are from
the mid-west or west coast, the sounds of the trains are music to your ears.
This is our account and only ours, but we felt we must pass it along due to
the recent erroneous and onerous impressions passed on to loopers.
