Dan,
 I have he same engines.
 Have experienced the same.
 It is an air leak on the SUCTION side to there is , probably , no leaking 
fuel.
 These can be notoriously difficult to find.
Tighten every fitting. If this does not fix it then------.
Have you changed fuel filters lately?

It took me over 3 yrs to find one intermittent surge leak.
Since it is intermittent it is difficult to say when it got fixed. I kept 
playing with it.First one eng then the other!!!
