I have never used horn blasts, at all , to contact the lockmasters.
We have always just called them on the VHF
This inculdes the Tenn-Tom , Alabama, and Apalachicola river systems

CONTACTING LOCKMASTERS ON THE HEARTLAND RIVERS

I need a little help from those on this list whose home cruising
waters include the Heartland Rivers and who use the Army Corps of
Engineers Locks.

According to Chapmans and other sources the CORRECT signals to give
to the Lockmasters at Army Corps of Engineers Locks (particularly
where there are two locks together) are as follows:

One Long HORN blast to Enter the landward lock, one Short to Leave It

Two Long HORN Blasts to Enter the riverward lock and Two Short
Blasts to Leave It

Is there an easy way to remember which lock is landward and which
is riverward???

When doing the Americas Great Loop Cruise during the 2002, 03 and 04
boating seasons, we usually called the Lockmasters on VHF Marine
Radio Channel 13, 14 or 16 (according to the local cruising guide)
and did not use HORN Signals. Only on one occassion were we given a
one horn blast telling us it was OK to leave the lock - we repeated
the signal when we were clear and then thanked the lockmaster on the
radio!

We are working on a Power Point Presentation for the United States
Power Squadrons CRUISE PLANNING COURSE on Locking and would like
to include only accurate and up-to-date information.

We were taught to use the same Horn Signal for Locks as for Bridges
-- One Long Blast followed by One Short Blast. Are Army Corps of
Engineers Locks different, do they not monitor VHF Marine Radio
channels or have Red and Green Signal Lights as do most other locks
on the Great Loop?

We would appreciate any input as to the proper contacts (Phone or
Email) with the Army Corps of Engineers, Coast Guard, and/or Websites
with this information.
