Many of the geo-sync satellites use very directional antennas to beam their
coverage to their intended customers, and keep it away from areas that they do
not want to serve.
This allows them to use a lower transmitter power level (i.e., use less solar
generated electricity) since they are not 'wasting' the power covering areas
they don't want to serve.
