If you never anchor out, never run aground, or never have to "abandon ship"--I
suspose that there would be no reason for a dinghy.

The latter is probably the least reason to have a dinghy.  But if you do
happen to run aground--and most of us do at some time, you can put out a kedge
anchor, you can sound out which way is the best way to go, and you can even
use the dinghy as a "tug" boat to move the boat's aligment to deeper water.

If you anchor out--it is to get to shore, it is to explore places where you
will not take the larger boat.  We have dinghies in our current boats--which
are 25 and 28 feet respectively and draw only 12" and 18".   The dinghy is
your "station wagon" for supplies, and sight seeing.
