You don't NEED one, particularly if you are marina hopping around the loop. 
However if anchoring out is your choice, a dinghy is a nicety, but maybe not 
quite a necessity. Visit neighbors in the anchorage, explore the anchorage, 
go ahore for sightseeing, provisioning, watering a dog, ...
