Ron:

I don't think "manually monitoring of the SG" will tell you much. The 
hydrogen evolved during equalization will influence the SG reading.

But all you have to do is watch the charging voltage. When it reaches the 
proper level- about 15.5 volts or so, then shut the equalization off. Some 
equalization chargers do this automatically, but it isn't difficult to do 
"manually".
