A couple of boaters on this list have been thinking about a northern
Itinerary. This is the time of year when northern boaters merely dream about
cruising. Here is an interesting itinerary for boaters who live on Lake Erie to
dream about.
We trailered our boat to Cleveland in the year 2000 so I call this the
Cleveland Loop.
The Cleveland Loop
Starting from Cleveland: Buffalo, Erie Canal, 1000 Islands, to Kingston
Ontario.
Continuing from Kingston: Trent-Severn Waterway to Midland, Ontario.
Continuing from Midland: Georgian Bay outside route to Tobermory, Lake St.
Clair and back to Cleveland. This completes the Cleveland Loop.
There are couple of optional side trips also.
Side Trip 1 from Kingston. Rideau Canal, Ottawa River, Lake Champlain, Erie
Canal to Oswego and back to Kingston.
(The more adventurous can continue east to Quebec City or beyond)
Side Trip 2 from Midland. Georgian Bay small craft route, Killarney, Blind
River.
then return via Meldrum Bay and Gore Bay to Tobermory.
(The more adventurous can continue west to Sault Ste. Marie or beyond.)
Comments: Lake Erie direction is with the prevailing wind.
Bridge clearance is 15.5 feet on the western Erie Canal.
The alternate route is the Welland Canal.
Welland Canal only requires two crew members downbound.
Ottawa River and St. Lawrence are downstream to Montreal
Meldrum Bay is a Canadian port of entry.
Something to dream about!
