Bob,
Try this trip on for size - there are a lot of permutations and
combinations here but this seems to work - or at least it will get a
discussion going.
>From the Hudson River, head west on the Erie Canal to Lake Erie, go the
length of Lake Erie (watch the weather!) to Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron
- north to where the three lakes (Huron, Michigan and Superior) come
together - do whatever travelling you wish in Michigan and Superior and
then head east through the North Channel, south through the Parry Sound
area, past Penatanguishene to Port Severn.
Somewhere in this area, you will want to haul it and wrap it for the
winter. Someone with local knowledge will give you a good contact - Port
Severn Marina or Victoria Harbour come to mind - both good spots.
Then, the next spring (after the canals open - very difficult if you
don't wait!), it's Port Severn, down the Trent Severn System to Trenton
(Lake Ontario), the St. Lawrence River to Kingston, the Rideau Canal to
Ottawa, the Ottawa River to Montreal, eastbound on the St. Lawrence to
Sorel, the canal to Lake Champlain and out the south end to the Hudson
River. Before you go south into Lake Champlain, you may want to extend
down the St. Lawrence to Quebec City or even to the Saguenay River,
keeping in mind that you will be bucking the St. Lawrence current back to
Sorel - not a big deal but something to remember.
It's the reverse of what you were talking about but it keeps you "with"
the current on the St. Lawrence and the Ottawa Rivers (except for the
extension).
Good luck! It's a great trip. I haven't done all of it but I'll finish
it one of these years.
