Hello All,
We use a memory foam mattress. Took a pattern to the local futon
maker. He made the matress with tapered sides and all plus a sunbrella
cover w/zippers. Around $400.
Also, close to the subject (literally), is the subject of
condensation under mattresses and cushions. Some people have a problem
with this and spend a great deal of money on "marine solutions". A
great thing that we heard of a while ago (probably on one of the boat
lists) is to put common, garden lattice under the mattress or cushions.
You know, the thin wood strips stapled into an x pattern. Just get
some at your local lumber dealer, cut it to shape and it will provide
air passages under the matress or cushion. We use it on our berth and
have no problems. Friends use it under a cushion that rest on top of a
freezer. They used to have mold there all the time and now have none.
You can even find lattice that is made of untreated wood if you find
preservatives under the bed a bad thing.
