I dinghy is a good thing to have if

you don't marina hop and want to explore anchorages or go ashore,

you want to have an escape in case something disastrous happens aboard 
(fire, sinking),

you have a pet aboard that needs to go ashore,

you need solitude away from the admiral or Capt Bligh,

you want to clean away the waterline crud
