I can only think of three reasons to have a SSB while doing the loop and none very good: 1) you have a buddy boat that is way ahead or behind you, out of VHF range, that you want to keep in touch with, but then cell phones will do this on 99 44/100% of the loop, or 2) you do email over SSB, or 3) you just want one. -- Jim Ague
