When I was in the Navy we always used petrolium jelly. It is sticky if you  
touch it but it works great. If it's good enough to be used in admiral's 
country  (navy jargon) on open steel, stainless steel and chrome plated steel it 
should  work on offshore pleasure craft. It also kept salt from building up and 
drying  out rubber gaskets on the hatches too. We even used it on brass. Of 
course when  you are not in the elements you want it cleaned off.
