The Western end of the Erie Canal is definitely one of the AGLCA
recognized Great Loop routes. There are two reasons most boaters
don't go the Erie Canal from the Hudson River to Lake Erie -- (1)
Because of the lower height limitation of only 15.5 feet and (2) To
do so would mean not doing the 1000 Islands and the Trent-Severn
Waterway (one can still do the Georgian Bay and North Channel by
going up Lake Huron and into the Bay and North Channel that way.

If possible, one should not miss doing the Rideau Waterway, even if
they must go from Lake Ontario up the St. Lawrence and then back down
the Rideau versus going the Champlain route!
