GL: Bridge Clearance Height

The controlling bridges on the Great Loop are in the Chicago area above 
Lockport Lock.  
Bridge clearance on the Chicago River is limited to 17 feet by a railway 
bridge at mile 320.4.
The Calumet River is an alternate route.
Bridge clearance is limited to 19.1 feet by a railway bridge at mile 300.6
It is not possible to bypass this bridge.
Depending on the actual water level there is normally two feet of additional 
clearance.

Bridge clearance on the Erie Canal is 20 feet at maximum pool elevation.
Depending on the actual water level there is normally one foot of additional 
clearance.

Bridge clearance on the Champlain Canal is 17 feet at normal pool.

(Note:  Bridge clearance on the western part of Erie Canal, not on the Great 
Loop Route, is only 15.5 feet.)
