> And, for that matter, what about the PeeDee and the Waccamaw?

I absolutely recommend the beautiful, historic 15 mile trip up the Waccamaw
to Conway, SC. See my review in ActiveCaptain (www.activecaptain.com),
lat/long is: 33049.938'N, 079002.653'W. Claiborne Young's Guide to SC and GA
gives advice and description of the trip, ActiveCaptain can be used to
verify the route, e.g. follow the west side of Thorofare Island. And as the
captain of the 65' Jungle Princess tour boat told me, "follow the markers
and stay away from the lily pads, and you won't get into trouble."

Once you reach Conway, do not enter the city marina, nor the private marina
behind a row of townhouses, but tie up at one of the two identical 40'
floating docks. Plenty of water to float on, no water for the tank, but
there is a 15 amp outlet near the base of a lamp post. You can go under the
50' bridge just beyond the 2nd floating dock and do a U-turn or anchor in
front of a waterside restaurant.

We stayed for 4 days, attended a play, visited museums and art galleries,
dined out. Very walkable. Conway is much more like visiting Georgetown or
Beaufort, SC, than Myrtle Beach. Conway used to be a Seaport, if that's the
proper word. The remains of the railway tracks and warehouses in the
waterfront area are still there.

Just recently I drove through Conway and stopped to visit the waterfront
area. I spotted a 42' trawler, Lone Ranger, tied up at a T-dock in the
private marina and chatted with the single-handler. This is Hans' second
wintering in Conway. He loves the area as I do. He is an avid tennis player
with city courts 1 block away, plus he has appeared in a couple of the
plays.
