Hello Captain Bill:
Yes, I have cruised all three of the rivers you mention extensively. The
Waccamaw is rightly known as the single most beautiful stretch of the Atlantic
Intracoastal Waterway. It is peppered with superb anchorages, particularly
Bull Creek and Thoroughfare Creek. If you will go to
http://www.CruisersNet.net, and then peruse the buttons along the left side of
the page, find the "Cruising News From" section, and then click on the "South
Carolina" button/link, you can read a very recent posting about anchoring on
Thoroughfare Creek, by Captain Bobbie Blowers.
The Pee Dee's southernmost section is navigable down to Georgetown and Winyah
Bay, but it is blocked by a fixed bridge, with, if memory serves, some 20 feet
of vertical clearance. Craft needing more clearance can access the Pee Dee by
way of Casino Creek from the Waccamaw River/ICW, but be warned that this is a
LONG cruise.
North of its intersection with the Black River, the Pee Dee soon enters a
delta-like region, and depths rise to the 4 to 5 foot region. I usually
suggest that cruising size craft avoid this section of the stream.
The Black River intersects the Pee Dee several miles north of Georgetown and
cuts generally west. This is a charming stream, with many anchorage
possibilites, and affording spectacular views of the abandoned rice fields so
indicative of this region. After leaving the chart, the Black does pass under
a power line and you must also bypass an uncharted island bisecting the river.
Cruisers should cease their explorations at the Highway 701 bridge. Farther to
the west, depths become very uncertain, and the stream narrows considerably.
All three rivers receive extensive coverage, including their myriad anchorage
possibilities in my "Cruising Guide to Coastal South Carolina and Georgia."
Hope this has been helpful. Good luck, good cruising and Happy New Year

Anyone ever cruise the Black River in South Carolina? Are there good
guidebooks and/or charts of this river? Looks interesting as a side trip
off
the Loop. And, for that matter, what about the PeeDee and the Waccamaw?
