Just received this bit of information from Claiborne Young who asks that
it be passed along. This is indeed good news, but certainly more work is
needed.

Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Receives The Most Funding in Years
Hello Fellow Cruisers:
I cannot think of a better gift for the entire cruising community during
this 2007 Holiday Season than the news concerning funding for the
Atlantic ICW, that we have just posted on the Salty Southeast Cruisers'
Net. Read on, and hum Jingle Bells as you do!
Just occasionally, things time out about right. Some two weeks ago, I
received an e-mail from one of the Nets' long-time correspondents, and
an old friend of mine, Captain Bobbie Blowers. She opined that with the
Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway showing all the problems that have come
to light during this fall, 2007 cruising season (and earlier), perhaps
the Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net should take a more pro-active,
political role in finding some funding for this CRITICAL cruising craft
super highway. I have had a bit of trouble getting back up with Captain
Bobbie, as she and her other half are off cruising, but I would have
told her that the SSECN has always tried to actively support the
Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Association, and its Executive Director,
Rosemary Lynch. It is our collective opinion that this organization
already has the mechanisms and personnel in place to give the ICW its
best chance for adequate funding and recognition. That remains our
collective point of view.
So, with Captain Bobbie's note in hand, I called Rosemary some ten days
ago, and asked her to write a SPECIAL REPORT for the Salty Southeast
Cruisers' Net about where things stand in Washington as to the
Waterway's future. Rosemary was very receptive to the idea, but asked me
to hang on for another week or so, as there just MIGHT be some news well
worth sharing.
Boy, talk about an understatement! As you will see from Rosemary's
article (see below), the Atlantic ICW has AT LAST received SOME much
needed funding. Now, let us quickly say that these moneys will NOT
permanently solve the Waterway's shoaling problems, BUT they do
represent the most significant Waterway funding in years, particularly
for South Carolina and Georgia.
I urge everyone on this alert list to read and comment on Rosemary's
article without delay. And, PLEASE pass along this note to your fellow
cruisers who are not members of this list. Those of you who are members
of yacht clubs and US Power Squadrons, please put this notice in your
club newsletters, and those who are members of other nautically oriented
mailing lists, please copy this note to your list as well.
To read Rosemary's important article, go to http://www.CruisersNet.net,
and peruse the navigational buttons along the left side of our home
page. Find the "Cruising News From" section. You can then click on any
one of the "North Carolina," "South Carolina," "Georgia," or "Eastern
Florida button/links. Rosemary's article and my opening comments will be
found near the top of each page, though that will change as new postings
are received!
Let us know what you think. Send comments to
CruisingWriter at CruisersNet.net. Good luck, good cruising and Happy Holidays!
