We, too, have been looking at downsizing to something trailerable so that we
can access cruising destinations across the country. Having spent 8 years
rolling and getting rolled on our Tradewinds 38 trawler - especially in the
ICW where it seems manners have gone out the window - we're staunch
believers in catamarans. No rolling, no pounding, great ride. We've
currently got a World Cat 266 which we love and which has confirmed our
belief in cats, but it's not laid out for cruising.

We're taking a long hard look at the C-Dory Tomcat 255 which Georgs
mentioned below. I was out in Seattle a month ago and toured the factory,
and was very impressed. I think I see one looming in our future. :-)

Yes, it has outboards; no, it's not a diesel.  But everything's a tradeoff;
in this case, it's space: the TomCat's got a nice big stern cockpit, good
living and storage space where otherwise an engine box would be.

If you want to learn more about the boats from actual owners, the C-Dory
owners have a great site at http://www.c-brats.com/. Also, El & Bill
Fiero's website at http://www.geocities.com/bill_fiero/ is a true testament
to the fact that you can do a lot of quality cruising in a small boat.

The new TomCat 255 would also make a great boat for your purpose:
