All,

What about standard whistle signals rather then radio hailing? I thought
that's what they were for. My guess is that it's because so few boaters
know, remember or follow this most basic rule of the road. 

Here on the Ohio even the commercial tugs don't use or respond to standard
whistle signals. You have to hit the coast before they become meaningful. As
for the good old boy about to go past you in his 46 foot SeaRay at 35 knots,
50 feet off your beam...fuggitaboutit. Just hold on.

always thought it would be a good idea to put your boat name on the front
of your vessel, for oncomming traffic. Haven't seen that much.
