GL: Can one avoid Canada?

I would be extremely interested to hear from others if this is their  
experience.  I have a friend who did this very thing two weeks ago  
and was rewarded with a very intense inspection.  He was berated for  
filling out the paperwork beforehand (for a shotgun).  If any others  
have firsthand experience I'd like to hear it, as I may bypass Canada  
as well.
