GL: New York Harbor Security Zones

My home waters are New York Harbor, where every law enforcement agency is all
over the place. I get busted regularly there. Ya'd think after a few years
they would know me, but they don't. Here's a set of pictures I took right
after 9/11 and you see the coast guard boat coming up behind us intending to
board us:

That was the first of many many
boardings by the Coast Guard, NY Marine Police, NJ Marine Police, etc etc.,
all thinking they finally found a blond terrorist.

Last fall I got boarded
two days in a row, complete with 19 year old kids pointing deck mounted
machine guns at me. That's a real eye-opener!

In the Arthur Kill Waterway,
I was trying to photograph the Tug Emma Roehrig and the light was all wrong
so I circled around for a few moments and the captain hailed me. I said I was
just photographing his tug for my website and I'll be gone in a few moments.
Just as I left, "Vessel Traffic" (GC) hailed the Roehrig and said "Switch and
answer 22" so I switched also, hoping the Roehrig was about to move, maybe
allowing a better photo. The first thing I heard was Vessel Traffic saing
"What kind of a boat was it?" and the reply from Roehrig "It was a blue
trawler, name is Tug 44", followed shortly by "OK thanks, we have them on
camera". I heard them on the radio following me through the camera system,
and in a few minutes, I got to meet the guys with the machine guns. Here's
the picture I was after:

The following
day, I was ambushed and surrounded by the NJ Marine Police taking this
picture:

The NJ Police
screamed at me that I should have known about the unmarked security zone. I
was sooo tempted to scream back that I didn't get the secret memo.

That's
life in the big city. It's soooo calm and quiet here on the Erie Canal! Here
on the canal, when commercial boats notice me snooping around with my camera,
they often invite me aboard, offer me a beer, and let me photograph their
engine rooms, etc. Different world here.

I didn't find his Cuba log, but did find an
interesting description of him
anchoring near Liberty Island, violating the
security zone to take
photographs, and being arrested and taken to the
bowels of Ellis Island for
interrogation as a suspected terrorist.
