OK, most cruisers take the Michigan side, but I think the ideal passage to Chicago includes the Wisconsin side, in the following order. Here is a "smell the roses" tour, and I believe you will be rewarded!
You will certainly stop at Mackinac Island. Gotta see It! Mackinaw city is also a nice stop, with a restored fort..
From there, head into Lake Michigan to Harbor Springs, Petosky, and then down to Charlevoix. Follow with Leland, and then head out to Beaver Island.
From Beaver, continue westward to Wisconsin, Bay of Green Bay, and put in at Detroit Harbor on Washington Island, perhaps spending a night on the hook in the notch at the top of Detriot Island. Good Holding (sand) and well protected.
From there, go around Washington Island north to Rock Island (state park, tiny but good harbor) for a restored industrialist's isand retreat. Jackson Harbor also has a museum, small but interesting; watch your depth, but good tie-ups at the docks,)
Then further north to Fayette, a Michigan state park which is a restored mining village, great harbor and docks, fascinating historical site. Spend a day just wandering around, it is a GREAT site1
From there, proceed south to our Door County, to Sister Bay (Al Johnson's restaurant, goats on the grass roof, you gotta see!) and then sweet little Ephraim (tie up at Anderson Dock, visit the art gallery there), and have an ice cream cone at Wilson's (state law - you gotta stop there!!)
Then Fish Creek (Town Dock, good tie-up) charming little village, eat at the White Gull or look for any 'Fish Boil": whitefish heaven!
Proceed on down to Egg Harbor, walk up into town. Restaurants and shops galore. Go nuts!
Proceed to Sturgeon Bay, various clubs and marinas, and then back out into Lake Michigan. Stay 2-3 miles or so offshore in this northern portion of the route south. Some shallowing up here.
En route to Chicago, you will have Algoma, Kewaunee, Two Rivers, Sheboygan, Port Washington, Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Wintrhrop Harbor, Waukegan, and then all the harbors in Chicago, all of which have facilities, fuel, etc.
So your cruise can be enjoyable, with harbors of refuge close at hand, and, if you take the time, many interesyting things to see.

"Slow Dance" a ocean alexander 45 has completed the Canadian portion of the
great loop. We entered Canada at Kingston and transited the trent severn
waterway. Then on through the Georgian Bay and the North Channel. We have now
cleared customs at Drummond Island, MC. We want to thank all the good advise
we received from members of this list. We now plan to start our trek south
down lake Michigan.
Any advise about route to take down the lake to Chicago ??
Thanks to all,
