I would also suggest a call to Boot Key Harbor City Marina 
(305-289-8877) a few days before arrival, and ask how many boats are 
on the waiting list for a mooring.  That list is usually about 15-20 
boats in winter, and doesn't turn over very fast.  At least it will 
give you an idea if you are going to have trouble.  You almost always 
see boats anchored outside the mouth of the harbor, just south of the 
entry channel.  A bit bouncy there, but apparently good holding.

There were some random anchoring spots in Boot Key Harbor proper, but 
scuttlebutt said they were planning to expand the mooring field and 
eliminate random anchoring.  The hurricanes of 04-'05 made a real 
mess of Marathon, destroying many marinas.  Some are being slowly 
rebuilt as condos and dockominiums.
