We too used a Magic Chef icemaker. We purchased ours at Home Depot in
December for $150 and used it during the 3 months we were in the Bahamas.
Since we are a 27' sailboat without an internal generator, we used our Honda
2000 generator to run the icemaker whenever we had no access to ice. The
only drawback was that because the ice is made around super-cooled metal
prongs and are thus hollow domes, they melt faster than solid
cubes. Because we were unable to run it all the time, we did buy ice in the
Bahamas ($4-$5/ 10# bag!!!), but ice wasn't available a lot of the time so
this icemaker was well worth it. Ice was our only method of keeping food
cold. For water, we used either gallon bottled water or water put through a
water filter.
Because ice is much more readily available on the Great Loop (and at a more
reasonable price) and because space it at such a premium on a 27' sailboat,
we will probably not take the icemaker with us when we start our second loop
from Jacksonville in a couple of weeks. We are very happy with the Magic
Chef icemaker and are now using it in our motorhome to make ice while Koko
is on the hard getting spiffed up for her 2nd Loop. Sweet tea and gin and
tonics are just not the same without lots of ice!
