GL: Portable Ice Maker

Kevin and list,

We took our ice maker out and converted the space into more storage
when we did the loop, primarily because our unit needed to be
replaced and we didn't think that it was practical to run the
generator all the time to make ice and keep it frozen. Additionally,
we do not drink water from marina docks or from the on board holding
tanks that has not gone through our small under the counter water
purification system which produces potable water which meets the EPA
bottled water purity standards. If you do install an ice maker, be
sure that you have a purifier system that produces potable drinking
water, not just a charcoal / sediment filter. You can't depend on
filling up your tanks with "city treated" water everywhere on the
Loop and much of what you get will be high sulphur and iron content
and or stale water in the marina dock pipes.

You may find the Potable water article on our website helpful (see
the Long Range Cruising ARTICLES Section at the website address below)
