What one does not have with satellite communications is the nets.  When long distance, or even coastal cruising the maritime mobile nets provide up to date (the conditions of situations that day) information on harbors, marinas, officials, potential problems etc.  
With satellite you can only dial a phone number --or if you have lots of bucks can access the internet....

The Ham also allows free E mail etc.
