Demopolis qualifies as being out of the Hurricane risk zone.  A number of the
boats on the Gulf Coast go up there for the hurricane season.

There is only one rental car company in Demopolis--and it is a local.  I don't
know how long the person would be leaving the car--but it might actually be
cheaper by taxi.  Unfortunately Greyhound has closed the office there.

I agree that Columbus is probably a good stop, but I believe that the airport
is a general aviation and charter airport only;  The other possibility is
Midway Marina,and flying out of Tupelo to Memphis or other airports via North
West or Delta which serve Tupelo.
