GL: Advice on timing would be appreciated

When we crossed we left Carrabelle at 6AM on a course to Red 2   SW of 
Cedar Key.
Then south to Tarpon Springs.  We wound up in a sea of traps 
(crab,fish?) on the south leg
at about 10PM.  No fun in the dark and 5 foot beam sea.  If I had it to 
do over I would set a direct course for Tarpon
Springs.
