Do not be to concerned by the crossing from Apalachacola to Tarpon
springs. This is not to say that it will always be nice, While the wind
is clocking around to the NW the seas can get very rough. Wait for
24 hours after the fronts passing, the seas will settle down and even the
slowest boat can make the crossing in 24 hours. Or if you prefer jump of
from Carrabelle, head due east to the west coast of Florida. then turn
south and run from marina to marina. The absolute max distance between
marinas is under 50 miles, including the entrance distances. If you go
in to Cedar Keys be sure to stay in the channels. Outside the marked
channels it gets shallow rapidly. Elsewhere the water is clear enogh to
see the bottom in 8-10 feet so it is easy to keep an eye out for anyting
you would want to go around. I have made this crossing many times,
usually thru the government cut south of Apalachacola and then head fdor
Tarpon Springs or the entance to Tampa Bay. The only time I hade any
trouble was while towing a friends boat and the seas built up to about 8
feet unexpectedly. An 8 foot sea is not all that great but when towing it
can get very nerve racking with the constant jerking on the tow line.
