a couple of things on sailboats.

the forward visibility is limited from the helm when under power. a
monohull is designed to heel and the cockpit and helm are designed
around this.

If it is tiller hours under power are very uncomfortable.

The comfort of an enclosed helm station can't be too highly stressed
when your spending months.
 aboard.

A day or two in foul weather gear in an open cockpit is one thing but
your not going to enjoy this over time and you won't only be underway in
fair weather.

The C-Dory is a decent compromise and really there is little sailing if
you stick to short legs and the ICW.

A lot of negatives for a few sunny days under sail.

MHO

Done the Chicago to Montreal leg in a canoe and circumnavigated S FL
several times in a small sail boat and a 50 ft trawler and will take the
trawler .
