As far as the Ten Tom:

One point that I failed to make and brought home by Rich Gano--is that at
times pool levels will be low--and there will be shoaling. I checked up on
the current flows and waterway levels. Right now we are at a low point in
flows and levels. (Some leves are 48% of normal for Oct 11th). To maintain the
9 foot controlling depth there has to be a minimum level and flow; for example
one lock's tail level should be 12 feet--it currently is 6 feet. Thus one
would expect to find shoal levels. So if you go this route you need to check
the internet to find out current levels.

The other issue I did not mention is the possibility of the going up the
Mississippi River. The average current on the Ten Tom is 0.5 knots, and can
be controlled (to a certain extent) by the dams and locks. The Mississippi is
often at flood stage in the spring--and currents are to the point that low
powered vessels may have difficulty navigating--plus debris is a major hazard.
Mississippi River navigation is an entirely separate subject and there are
many other factors involved with a larger craft.
