Our boat is equipped with Lifeline AGM batteries - one 4D starter, two 4D
house, and a smaller one for the generator. They are charged either by the
CAT engines or the 2000 watt Heart inverter.
These batteries are ideal. Absolutely no maintenance, as they are sealed. No
dangerous hydrogen gas emission. No acid buildup on terminals. Can be
installed in any position. Minimal charge loss during winter storage. We
still have original generator and starter batteries after 7 years. House
batteries replaced after 5 years (two on Loop), but that failure was caused by
an loose battery connection (long story). Can be completely discharged and
recharged without damage.
Downside is that weight/amp-hour is slightly higher than lead acid, and the
cost is somewhat higher.
