GL: gel batteries

I recommend AGM batteries for people who are not going to check their
batteries for water on a regular basis, have to put the batteries on their
sides, or in the living spaces or who want low self discharge. AGM also take
a charge slightly faster than a lead acid battery.
Although Gel cells are good batteries, there are far too many stories of
boaters ruining them by applying too high a voltage--any voltage over 14.1
volts will ruin a Gel cell in short order.
With proper care and handling all three types of batteries will serve well and
get about the same longivity. (This includes good quality lead acid--not
cheapies). Also look at the capacity of the battery in amp hours or reserve
minutes, to be sure that you have adequate battery power. If you discharge any
of these batteries more than 50% their life expectancy will be shortened. For
lead acid or gel cells this is 12.2 volts. For AGM this is 12.3 (but they
seem to be fine with 12.2 because they tolerate deep discharge slightly
better).
