Have to get my .02 in here: 
 
I operate Towboat U.S. Kenosha, Waukegan (AKA North Shore) Chicago, Hammond, Michigan City, New Buffalo, and the Illinois Waterway. 
When operating on any of those waters, you should have very possible device/resource you can use-meaning that you know how to use. The operators of all of our tow/salvage vessels are licensed shipmasters, or Masters of Towing Vessels(not 6pack operators with a assistance towing endorsement). Each of our towboats is equipped with a stand alone GPS, a chart plotter with its own dedicated GPS, and a Loran-C feeding to the plotter and obviously with its own readout. They also have UPDATED charts of all them waters they operate in, electronic and magnetic compass, 2 permanently mounted VHF, and a handheld VHF, radar, and the rest (hailers automatic fog horns etc.) Next year they will all have the new AIS systems. And these are guys who know their waters like the back of their hands. We joke about some of them having named the waves, on the Illinois Waterway some of them have named the trees on the banks(useful nav marks).
Yet these guys need all the help they can get,  I suggest that everyone else does also. In the larger scheme of things, the chartplotters and charts are cheap, cheap, cheap. Even if you are only going the route once. Compared to the costs of an insurance deductible, possible salvage/towing costs, and underwater machinery repair(if you have that exclusion in your policy), Charts and the plotters and related gear are incredibly cheap. I know that the prices seem steep up front, but peace of mind has a cost also.  Further, you can frequently recover half or more of the cost by selling fairly new equipment after your voyage.
You also NEED TO KNOW how to use all the stuff, preferably before the fog sets in.
please do not get me wrong, I need your business, especially after this last season. But like most in this business, I really like boats and boaters, and hate to see any boat damaged or lost.
By the way, after you have a casualty is NOT the time to check your insurance policy, the time is long before you set out. Check your coverages and navigation limits. Particularly your coverage for salvage and wreck removal-they are not the same thing.
Honest, I hope if I see you from one of the red boats, I will be able to wave-with out a towline in my hand.
