GL: Garmin Chartplotter Chips

For a one time trip, I would question the efficiency of purchasing
electronic chips just to cover the Loop route. Its got to be more
economical to use the paper charts for those areas that you will most
likely not be visiting again for a while. And with the paper charts, you
can use them either on the flying bridge or in the main salon steering
station for the same cost.
thanks

Have any of you Great Loopers used a Garmin Chartplotter in your travels
up the coast of New Jersey and then up the Hudson on part of your trip?
Is the chartplotter useful on the river portions of the trip?
Thanks in advance.
