Yes, you can access the Internet with both computers at the same time. Having
a 13yr old -- that is a requirement on our long cruises (he spent 2 months
straight with us on the boat last summer). Without a router -- you need to
setup an Ad-hoc network between the computers -- then you can share the
Verizon Aircard connection (advance tab on properties) -- then set the gateway
on the other computer to be the IP of the computer with the card. I'm sure
I'm missing many steps but that is the overall view.

back and forth

navigation/business and one for the kids. We share the Verizon Aircard
connection.
