If you have a scale aboard, even a bathroom scale, you can easily keep track
of how much fuel you still have in your tank. Here is how you can do it.
On the collar of each tank is information stamped in and you want to find
the TW (Tear weight or tank weight) which is stamped there. This TW is the
weight of the tank without fuel in it, usually about 17 or 18 pounds for your
normal steel 20 pound grill type tank.
After having the tank filled with 20 pounds of fuel the total weight of the
tank should be around 37 or 38 pounds, without the regulator and hose attached
 of course.
So by disconnecting the tank and weighing it on occasion you will know that
any weight above 17 or 18 pounds is actually how many pounds of fuel you
have left in the tank.
If you use this method you don't have to guess how much fuel you have left
and you will probably be surprised how long a tank will actually last you now
that you can accurately determine the amount of fuel remaining in the tank.
