GL: How much Propane

composite propane tanks
The December issue of "Passagemaker" magazine has an article on Composite
tanks, They are lighter than steel and half as expensive as aluminum. Not
much more than the rust prone steel one. I think they are new to the
market and have not seen an example.

A couple of things I forgot to mention in my earlier post.
"Normal" propane tanks rust quite readily, even when in a protected and
vented area. While the trade-in tanks are handy if you can find a
trade-in station, it's still quite common to find refill stations at
least along the east coast of the US where we've done most of our
cruising to date. (Just get them filled when you have a vehicle
available.) As a consequence, we have two aluminum tanks - one 20# and
one 11#. They don't rust, not even the one kept outside attached to a
hand rail support and used for the outdoor grill. They've been aboard
Sanderling at least as long as I've owned her (going on 10 years) and my
guess is that the PO bought them during the time he owned the boat.
We've never actually run out of propane, but have the tanks "topped off"
when the gages start to go below the green zone - that is the 2-3 month
time frame when cruising full time. My guess is that they'd last at
least twice as long if we fully depleted the propane before a refill.
Our propane supplies are used only for cooking.
