Line from the old John Prine song "used to live in Chicago, where the cold winds blow..". NOT to worry! Here in Milwaukee, for the last few years, I have boated here and Chicago in great weather all through October.
And if it does blow a bit, you've got harbors on both sides of Lake Michigan to duck into. And no, marinas DON'T close right after labor day. they don't even haul a lot of boats until mid October.
So come ahead! And once you get into the river system, weather is just a minor inconvenience, anyway.
And how did Gordon Lightfoot put it? "Gales of November...."! Ya got another whole month!

If they close all the marinas after Labor Day,
then you may be up that well known body
of water without means of propulsion. I'm
sure the waters don't start freezing over
THAT early, but are upper state boaters
that sissified about cooler weather????
Maybe it's just the rich folks in their BIG
boats???
What's the deal here? I know that there
are lots of folks up there who think it is
a great joy to sit on an overturned pickle
bucket on the ice and try to catch fish
through a hole therein!!

All,
Being in Chicago by Labor Day is a convenient and easy date to
remember. That said, back in 1959 I remember having 4 inches of SNOW
at our cottage on Moon Island, 22 miles down the South Channel from
Parry Sound (near Sans Souci, Ont) in the Georgian Bay on Labor Day!
So, if you don't mind driving your boat in snowy conditions, there is
no problem. That said, you are probably safe in most years until mid
to late September to get off the Great Lakes.
