GL: NJ Boaters/ICW

I have worked/traveled all over the U.S. Canada and Mexico.

By far, the worst place to go was N.J. They are the most rudest of people.
If they drive their boats like they drive their cars, then I can bet what was
said about the NJICW is probably true.

As a native NJ kid, who lived and boated there many years before moving to
Lake Michigan, I guess I have to respond to the recent characterization on
this site of NJ boaters as "seriously drunk" channel hoggers. I do realize
that the message was intended to be funny, (at least I hope so), but let's
not
go overboard at the expense of a small state that offers almost as much
coastline as any in the south, with some of the best boating and beaches
compared to anywhere.

It's true that the section of the NJ ICW from Cape May to Atlantic City
should
be avoided except by shallow draft vessels. The NJ ICW from Atlantic City to
Manasquan should be OK to four feet except for periods when NW winds blow the
water out of the bay. It's also a good idea to stay tied up on weekends to
avoid the fleet of small boat fisherman crowding the channels drifting for
fluke; after all, NJ has the highest population density of any state, and is
also the water playground of New York City and Philadelphia. Go slow so that
if you do drag the bottom (almost always sand) your gear isn't damaged. But
the rewards of cruising Barnegat Bay, with its resort towns, restaurants and
access to some of the best ocean beaches (anchor east of Tices shoal inside
Island Beach) on the east coast, and yes, great fishing and crabbing should
not be missed if you have up to four foot draft.
As for seriously drunk, high speed boaters and channel hoggers, I've seen
just
as much abuse if not more by cruisers and delivery captains on the Western
Rivers, the canals in Canada, and the shallow rivers and narrow channels of
Florida.

Gimme a break! Blasting all New Jersey boating is in the same category as
slamming all Sea Ray owners. Fawgeddaboudit.
