NYS is making a concerted effort to attract boaters and other recreational
users to the NYS canal system. The route through which the canal travels has
seen an exodus of industry and jobs and the area is somewhat economically
depressed. Tourism is seen as a partial replacement. Those who have taken a
canal
journey know that it is an enjoyable experience in one of the most attractive
cruising grounds in the country. Your experience will be augmented if you take
side trips to the Finger Lakes and rent a car to take a vineyard tour. It is
as
good, and a lot less expensive, than a Napa Valley "Sideways" experience. As
Fred says, anchoring in the canal or tying up at many town docks is free.
